We guide you to the magnificent ancient city of Butrint, which is a magical experience in itself. Surrounded by coastal wetlands, saltwater lagoons, rivers and grazing lands makes this a rare and unique archaeological site. The site and preserved area today (85 sq kilometers) is considered to be the “gem of the country”. The founder of Auron Expeditions, Auron Tare, was the Director of the site from 1998-2004. He was instrumental in designating the area a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as a Ramsar protected area. His story goes beyond telling the history of Butrint, but brings a ‘real life’ perspective to the work and political struggle detailing how Butrint became what it is today; how it was founded, lost and rediscovered in the 21st Century.
Close by, we will travel to the undiscovered ancient city of Phoenicia shrouded in the mystery of their founders, to the Ottoman City of Gjirokastra or to the city of Durrachium as Cicero once called ‘the tavern of the Balkans”. The southern region of Albania has over 104 ancient monuments to explore.
We will uncover the places where Julius Cesar fought Pompeii; explore the route of the Crusaders on their travels to the Holy land, where Normans started their advance towards the east and where the armies of the Ottoman Sultans once fought.
